Hagia Sofia

This past weekend we were fortunate enough to visit Hagia Sofia, a place that has been on our list for the last year.  What an amazing spot!

This guest post is from Beatriz Flores of Hagia Sofia.

An agro-ecological development on more than 130 hectares, Hagia Sofia is located at an altitude between 260 and 390 meters above sea level in the community of Apanquito, municipality of Santa María Huatulco, Oaxaca, only 45 minutes from the tourist destination of Bahías de Huatulco.

At Hagia Sofía it is possible to appreciate the different phases of cultivation of fruit and timber yielding trees, a variety of vegetables, as well as a great diversity of wild flora and fauna. More than 400 indigenous plant species live in harmony with nearly 100 varieties of plants whose origin can be found in South East Asia, and both Central and South America.

All fruits and flowers are grown and developed in conditions which are totally organic. This requires and relies on installations and construction that support the production of organic fertilizers and insecticides, composting and vermicomposting (composting with worms).  The process of pollination is supported by an apiary consisting of 40 hives.

Rambután
Hagia Sofía has more than 80 species of fruit trees including the unique production of  rambután, mangostán and noni as well as varieties of mango, banana, guava and citrus trees that grow along side other fruits such as passion fruit, litchi, tamarind, pineapple and guanábana.

Interpretive Path of Heliconias at Hagia Sofia

A path through exotic flowers allows visitors to take their time to observe some 60 different varieties of heliconias from Asia and tropical regions of Central America along 500 meters of natural walkway.  The trail offers an excellent opportunity to appreciate birds and butterflies in their natural habitat and to enjoy the refreshing waters of the Magdalena River in an environment of singular beauty.

Exotic Flowers

The magic of Hagia Sofía lies in respect for the environment and the philosophy of preservation that accompanies it.

Tours include transportation, a traditional breakfast prepared on site including quesadillas cooked on a comal with homemade tortillas, seasonal fruits and juices, a tour and explanation along the Interpretive Path of Heliconias, time to test the waters of the Magdalena River, a visit to La Campana waterfall and lunch consisting of rice, beans, and choice of chicken, fish or vegetarian strew also prepared on the wood burning stove.
