ITU Huatulco World Cup Triathlon

For the 3rd year in a row, Huatulco is hosting the ITU World Cup Triathlon.

This is a great event for the community as it brings international athletes together and a global spotlight to Huatulco.  In previous years, this event was held in Cancun, but the athletes who participate in this event have suggested Huatulco to be a much better destination than Cancun due to the technical nature of the course.  And for those of you who have been here, you can attest to the hilly terrain that makes up the Bahias de Huatulco.

This years event is comprised of several categories with both men and women competing. But, the most highly anticipated is the olympic distance elite competitors.  The gun will go off at 8:00am in the Bay of Santa Cruz and start with a 1.5 km swim.  From here, the competitors will exit onto the beach at Santa Cruz and head into the first transition onto their bikes for a 40km ride.  By this time, the comfortable 26 degree weather for their swim will have given away to hotter temperatures beginning to approach 30 degrees.  Once the cycling stage has been complete and the athletes enter into the running stage, the heat will really begin to takes its tole.  The temperature should now be around 34 degrees as they head into the 10km run.  For many, it is the final 10kms where they will have to summon all of their strength and mental toughness as the fatigue begins to set in.

Last years men's winner Javier Gomez from Spain won with an overall time of 1:49:08...swim 17:43, bike 59:15, run 31:36, and a total time in the transitions of :34 seconds.  The winner of the women's elite division was Ai Ueda from Japan with a time of 1:59:51...swim 20:14, bike 1:03:20, run 35:34, and a cumulative transition time of :43 seconds.  It will be interesting to see how these times will hold up in this years event!

As usual, there are some major sponsors supporting this event, and there simply would be no World Cup Triathlon in Huatulco without there help: ESPN Run, GMC, Banamex, Head & Shoulders, Gillette, Pantene, Gatorade, Telcel, Conade, and Fonatur.

We are excited for the return of this event and look forward to seeing you down here.

Good luck to all the competitors!
