Beautiful Beaches of Huatulco - Playa Montosa

A beautiful beach, on a deserted island, yet close to civilization?

Sort of I suppose.  This beach is one of those that I see almost on a daily basis, but am always driving when I do see it.  It is true, this beach is on an island.  Situated out in Tangolunda Bay, Montosa Island is not very big, but it's big enough to be a significant marker for boats and probably birds.

When you are driving from the west and pass the Chahue Marina, the road begins to rise as you head up the hill and approach the turn off for the Las Brisas Hotel.  Just past this point there is a pull out and vantage point where you will usually see all types of tourist vehicles parked.  From here, you have a very clear view of Montosa Island, and Playa Montosa.

What makes this beach so cool is that it is very clearly in view, but yet in many ways so far out of reach.  The only way you are going to get to this beach is by boat, jet ski, kayak, inner tube, stand-up paddle board, a very long snorkel, or something similar to this.  And just wanting to go isn't enough.  You will have to pay attention to the tides as this beach is not always exposed, and depending on the time of year, you may see only a few grains of sand poking through the water.

I have always wanted to visit Playa Montosa, but it's probably because it requires just that little extra bit of planning that it has always alluded me.  After all, we are a little spoiled here with all of the easier to access beaches.  I suppose though that the logistics of visiting this island beach is half the reason I really want to go.

As they say, "it's the journey, not the destination".  Although in this case, the destination looks pretty sweet!
