International Symposium of Biology and Conservervation of Sea Turtles

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), through the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) opened the "32nd International Symposium on Biology and Conservation of Sea Turtles" in the Las Brisas Hotel, Huatulco, Oaxaca.

The director of CONANP, Luis Fueyo MacDonald, reported that this symposium is organized by the International Sea Turtle Society and will see the participation of 700 scientists from Asia, Europe, Africa, Canada, United States, several countries in South America, and of course, Mexico.

He said the work will take place from the 12th of March with participants coming from different disciplines and cultures, as a common platform promoting the conservation of sea turtles, and they will analyze and exchange knowledge of research techniques and lessons about conservation and how sto solve the problems of conservation of sea turtles and their habitats.
He noted that the information generated during the event will serve to support the agenda for governments so they have the appropriate scientific and technical support to be able to directly influence decision making.

He added that the conservation of sea turtles is one of the topics of great importance among many countries world wide.  Mexico has an enormous responsibility as it's waters contain 5 of the 7 sea turtle species.

He recalled that for a long time Mexico has developed conservation programs for more than 35 years with the National Sea Turtle Conservation, whose headquarters is CONANP.

Luis indicated that this program has a structured participation by the federal government, state governments and civil society organizations that have commissioned a piece of beach where there are nesting sites and areas of protection .

This has generated a great national movement, and now there are over 130 conservation groups in Mexico aimed at protecting sea turtles.

Meanwhile, biologist Ana Rocha Rebecca Barragan, president of the International Sea Turtle Society and contributor to the CONANP, noted that the symposium will serve to share the knowledge of all research that has been carried out in the world involving specialists in their field, and present the latest information available on sea turtles around the world.
